成都双年展从创立至今，已经举办第三届了。如果再以成都现代艺术馆建馆后于1999年底举办的“世纪之门：1979—1999中国艺术邀请展”算来，已经是八年了。无论是世纪之初经济疏于关注艺术、艺术市场和艺术活动处于低迷之时，还是时下艺术市场日亦活跃，社会各界对文化建设日趋重视之时，这八年我们一路走来，一以贯之地坚持着我的初衷：中国经济的活跃和发展，必将作用于文化艺术。同样，只有中国自己的文化发展壮大，才会有中国社会经济的协调发展、和谐共荣的景象。中国的崛起离不开文化的崛起。
正是基于这样的认知，支持和推动中国本土艺术的发展，促进和繁荣本土文化事业，就成为成都现代艺术馆、成都双年展一直坚持的理念。这也是为什么八年以来，我们不懈地以一己之力投入和资助艺术的缘由。同时，从第一届成都双年展始，我们也把关注艺术的目光投向了“新人”，因为“正是新人的产生，才使得中国艺术生生不息的持续发展。可以说，关注新人，就是从发展的角度关注着中国艺术的未来”，关注新人、推出新人的“新人特展”，成为我们成都双年展的一大特色和亮点。
我们还高兴地看到，“成都双年展”作为一个文化品牌，获得了国内外越来越多的关注，这不仅使文化艺术与一个城市相关联，也使这个城市因此而不同。特别是北京、上海、广州、南京、深圳等城市都相继举办了各式各类的双年展、三年展等艺术活动，文化建设大有越来越被倚重之势，成都作为一个地处西南的内地城市，却早在八年前就跬步以积，发展至今。作为出生、生活和工作在这个城市的一份子，我可以为之贡献一己之所能，是我的荣幸和荣尚。在政府大力支持下，有三万多平方米的新艺术馆即将兴建。未来充满了期待，我们将继续努力，祝愿成都双年展越走越远。

Preface
The current Chengdu Biennial, Reboot, is the third since it has been held under the present name. If we count the first such exhibition, Door of the Millennium: Chinese Art Invitational, 1979-1999, held in 1999, when the Chengdu Modern Art Museum was first established, this exhibition series already has an eight-year history. The beginning of the new millennium saw a weakness in art activities and the market and insufficient attention to art by the business world. At present, the art market is increasingly hot, and all levels of society pay more attention to cultural undertakings. Regardless of these ups and downs, throughout these eight years, we have maintained our original principal: the development of the Chinese economy must affect culture and art. In other words, only when the cultural sphere of China is developed and expanded will Chinese society reach a harmonious state and the economy grow in a healthy way. China’s rise cannot take place without the rise of Chinese culture. This is also the reason why, during these eight years, we have tirelessly involved ourselves with sponsorship of artistic activities.
Based on this belief, support and promotion for the development of Chinese art and facilitation of cultural endeavors is the core mission of the Chengdu Modern Art Museum and the Chengdu Biennial. Since the first Chengdu Biennial we have also turned our eyes to emerging artists, because the appearance of new artists will stimulate the continued development of Chinese art. With concern for new artists and for the future of Chinese art, an emerging artists’ exhibition, to be held in conjunction with the major thematic exhibition, will be a special highlight of the Chengdu Biennial.
We are very happy to see the Chengdu Biennial receive more and more attention domestically and abroad. I am proud that Chengdu, an inland city located in China’s southwest, was a pioneer eight years ago, along with Shanghai, in the new exhibition format of the biennial. Now Beijing, Guangzhou, Nanjing, and Shenzhen all have biennials or triennials of different kinds, and such cultural construction is more and more highly valued nationwide. As a person born and raised in Chengdu, and still living and working in the city, I have done my best to contribute to this development. This is my honor and my pleasure.
With great support from the government, a new art museum building of 30,000 square meters will be constructed for coming biennials. The future is full of great hope, and we will continue to put our effort into these projects. I wish the Chengdu Biennial great success in the future.
I am very grateful to all the people who have supported the Chengdu Biennial over these eight years, and also to the colleagues who have worked so hard for this third biennial.
